Harness

Scope

Full Body harnesses are an important part of a complete fall arrest system.

Purpose

This toolbox talk describes how to wear and use a body harness.

Guidelines

When using a full body harness, follow these guidelines:

Read the manufacturer's instructions for proper donning, inspection, and use.

Visually inspect the body harnesses before each use. Look for burns, holes, cuts, or chemical damage. Inspect all hardware for burrs, cracks, and deformation.

The proper procedure for donning the harness will depend ond the type you have been given. Two of the most common styles are the vest style and crossover style. The vest style is typically identied as having a chest strap with shoulder straps running vertically down to the leg straps. Crossover harnesses have the shoulder straps crossing in front of the harness.

After donning the harness, peform a five-point buddy check. The buddy check system ensures that the harness is being worn properly.

Check that the O ring is located between the shoulder blades.

Look for any twisted straps.

Grasp the shoulder straps and attempt to slip them over the shoulder. If this happens, tighten the chest strap.

Check leg straps for proper fit. Your hand should only be able to be pushed through just past the knuckles. Tighten if too loose.

Tuck in loose straps to keep them out of running parts or snags on building structure.

Never store harnesses in gang boxes where they can be cut, punctured, or contaminated with grease, oils, paints, or solvents.

Remove any harness that has been subjected to a fall.

The harness should be either 100 percent on or 100 percent off. Do  not loosen or unsecure any straps during breaks or lunch, remove the harness completly.

Hang the harness by the back O-ring to help keep its shape when not in use.

Hang in a dry area out of the sun.

Harness can be washed with mild soap and warm water. Allow harness to air dry.
